The State of the Region report is a data-driven review commissioned by the former West Wales Sports Partnership (WWSP), now Activate West Wales. The Welsh Institute of Physical Activity Health and Sport (WIPAHS) drew together data to establish a picture of how active, or not, the region is.
The regional picture
West Wales is shaped by:
- An ageing population, particularly in Pembrokeshire
- Concentrated deprivation in parts of Swansea and Neath Port Talobt
- Strong links between ageing, disability and health need
- West Wales State of the Region Report
Participation levels are encouraging in some areas, but opportunity is not evenly distributed.
A powerful evidence-base for change
Data from the report revealed areas where people are least active, what barriers they face and how organisations can play a meaningful role in encouraging healthier habits.
The insights in the report directly shape Activate West Wales’ priorities and guide our long-term ambitions. It’s designed to empower and motivate action, giving partners the evidence they need to influence behaviour by collaborating with us to build a more active, healthier place to live.
The data sources used were:
- 2019 Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD)
- 2021 Welsh Census

- 2023 National Survey for Wales
- 2023 School Health Research Network (SHRN)

What this means

- Consistent, inclusive PE provision
- Support for adults facing the greatest health challenges

Reducing inequality — not just increasing participation — must guide our decisions.
From insight to action
The State of the Region provides a baseline for regional collaboration and smarter investment. An interactive dashboard allows partners to explore the data in more detail and apply it locally.
Let's activate West Wales together
Building a West Wales where being active is part of everyday life takes leadership, collaboration and people willing to think beyond their own delivery. We want to work with organisations and individuals ready to shape long-term, change. Our aim is to build partnerships with strategic leaders and decision makers, funders and investors, community and delivery partners, health, education, workforce partners and more.
